Itinerary: Day by Day

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Cedar Forest – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga (7 hours drive)

Sahara Unlimited organizes desert tours from Marrakech. This is a private tour of the Sahara desert, available every day.

Your driver meets you at your riad early, usually by 7 a.m. You leave through the Fes-Meknes ring road and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains.

First stop is Ifrane. Locals call it the Switzerland of Morocco. Sloped roofs and pine trees replace the flat rooftops of the Fes medina.

Next comes the cedar forest near Azrou. Barbary macaques live wild along the road. In spring, they are most active early in the morning, so a slightly earlier stop here often means better sightings.

You break for lunch in Midelt, a market town below the High Atlas. From there, the road drops into the Ziz Valley. Our guides usually stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Ziz Valley that large buses often skip, since there’s no parking for a coach. It’s one of the best photo stops on the route.

By late afternoon you reach Merzouga and the edge of Erg Chebbi. Camels are waiting. Sunset over the dunes usually begins around 6:30 p.m. in summer and closer to 5:30 p.m. in winter. You ride out as the light drops, and the dunes turn orange, then red, then grey.

Dinner and the night follow at camp.

Day 2: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Ziz Valley – Ifrane – Fes (7 hours drive)

Wake before sunrise. Climb a dune on foot or by camel and watch the light come up over Algeria. Mint tea and breakfast follow at camp.

You ride back to Merzouga, then drive to Rissani, the old trading capital of the Tafilalt region. If your visit lands on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday, the souk is open, and it’s worth 20 minutes on foot.

Erfoud comes next, known for fossil workshops cut straight into local rock. Then the return route: back up the Ziz Valley, through Midelt, over the Middle Atlas, past Ifrane again, and into Fes by early evening.

NOTE: This desert tour from Fes runs all year round and can depart at any date of your preference. Tour with Sahara Unlimited will be guided by a qualified local driver/guide.

Our professional driver from Sahara Unlimited will pick you up from your hotel/riad in Fes. Enjoy our comfortable A/C private Transport. We drop you off at your hotel at the end of the Tour. Dinners and Breakfast meals will be provided during the private tour of Merzouga desert.

The Road Trip: What You'll See Along the Way

This route crosses three different Moroccos in two days, and that’s the real draw of a Fes to Sahara tour.

Fes sits in the Saïss plain, ringed by olive groves. The medina of Fez is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dating back to the 9th century, and it stays with you as a reference point for everything that follows.

Ifrane sits at over 1,600 meters, cool even in summer. Snow is normal here in January and February. Pack a layer if you’re traveling outside the hot months.

The cedar forest near Azrou is one of the last homes of the Barbary macaque, a species found only in Morocco, Algeria, and Gibraltar.

Midelt marks the shift south. From here, the road tracks the Ziz River down through a canyon, then opens into the Ziz Valley oasis, a nearly unbroken run of date palms for over 20 kilometers.

Rissani was once the capital of the Tafilalt, the trading hub that connected Morocco to Timbuktu by camel caravan. The Alaouite dynasty, Morocco’s ruling royal family, traces its roots to this town.

Erg Chebbi itself rises up to 150 meters in places, among the tallest dune systems in Morocco, close to the Algerian border in the Drâa-Tafilalet region.

Your Desert Camp in Merzouga

You’ll stay at the Sahara Unlimited camp, set inside the dunes, away from the road and any light pollution. Dinner is a Moroccan tagine, cooked over coals. After dinner, camp staff play Berber drums around the fire.

Each tent has its own private bathroom and full-time electricity, so you’re not walking across the camp at night or losing power after dark.

Nights in the desert run cold outside of summer, even when the day was hot. Blankets are provided, but bring a warm layer for after sunset.

A private 2-day Fes to Merzouga tour costs more per person than a group departure. For couples, families, and small groups, that gap narrows fast, since the vehicle cost splits between you.

FAQ: 2 Day Fes to Merzouga Desert Tour

How much does a 2-day Fes desert tour cost? Private tours start from around €220 per person for four travelers. Smaller groups pay more per person. Contact us for a fixed quote.

Is this tour private or shared? Private. Your group books the vehicle and guide alone. No other travelers join your car or your tent group.

How long is the camel ride? What’s the alternative? The ride runs about 45 minutes to an hour each way, timed for sunset and sunrise. If you’d rather skip it, a 4×4 can take you and your bags to the camp instead.

What happens to my luggage during the camel ride? Small bags travel with you. Larger luggage goes ahead by 4×4 and will be waiting at camp when you arrive.

What’s the best time of year for a Fes to Erg Chebbi tour? Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) bring the mildest weather. Summer days in Merzouga often pass 40°C. Winter nights in the desert can drop near freezing, so pack accordingly.

What type of vehicle is used? An air-conditioned 4×4 or minivan, depending on group size.

Can you accommodate dietary preferences? Yes. Tell us about allergies or preferences when you book, and we’ll pass them on to the camp kitchen.

Is this tour suitable for kids or older travelers? Yes, with one note: the drive covers 7 hours each way, with stops. Younger children and travelers with mobility limits may prefer the 3-day version, which breaks up the driving.

What are the pickup and drop-off details? Pickup is from your riad or hotel door in Fes, typically 7 a.m. Drop-off is back at the same address on the evening of day 2, usually by 6-7 p.m.

What extra costs should I plan for? Lunch both days, bottled water, tips for your driver and camp staff, and any souvenir shopping in Rissani.

Emily Carter – London, United Kingdom

“The drive from Fes was long but surprisingly enjoyable because our guide stopped whenever we wanted photos. The camel ride at sunset was the highlight, and the camp was peaceful with great food and music around the fire. We never felt rushed and always had time to enjoy each stop.”

★★★★★

Daniel Thompson – Sydney, Australia

“We booked this private tour for our family of four and it was worth it. The vehicle was comfortable, our driver explained the places we visited, and the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes was unforgettable. Everything matched the itinerary exactly.”
