This tour is private and one-way. It starts in Marrakech and ends in Fes. If you’d rather return to Marrakech instead, ask about our 3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga round trip.

Can I do this tour in reverse, from Fes to Marrakech?

This tour is private and one-way. It starts in Marrakech and ends in Fes. If you’d rather return to Marrakech instead, ask about our 3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga round trip.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara

We are one of the leading operators for tours and travels in Morocco from Marrakech. Detailed itinerary below. Possible to customize any of our desert trips from Marrakech.

Day 1: Marrakech to Dades Valley via Ait Ben Haddou (6-Hour Drive)

Sahara Unlimited organises desert tour from Marrakech. This is private tour to Sahara desert , available every day.

Your driver picks you up at 7:30 AM from your riad or hotel. Pickup covers all central Marrakech, including areas near Bab Doukkala and the Menara district.

We climb into the High Atlas Mountains on the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest paved road in North Africa at 2,260 meters. Berber villages line the route below.

We stop at Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified clay village. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1987. Its walls have appeared in Gladiator and other major films.

After lunch in Ouarzazate, we pass the Taourirt Kasbah and continue through Skoura’s palm groves and the rose fields of Kelaat M’Gouna. The day ends in the Dades Valley, where you sleep in a local guesthouse surrounded by rock canyons.

Day 2: Dades Valley to Merzouga Sahara Desert (5-Hour Drive)

After breakfast, we drive through Todra Gorge. Limestone cliffs rise over 300 meters on both sides. You’ll have time to walk along the river at the base.

We continue through Tinghir and Erfoud, towns known for date palms and fossil workshops. By late afternoon, we reach Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Camels wait for you here. You’ll ride across the sand as the light shifts from gold to orange. At the top of a high dune, you’ll watch the sunset over the Sahara. Dinner and Berber drum music follow at camp. You sleep in a private tent under a clear desert sky.

Day 3: Merzouga to Fes via Ziz Valley and Ifrane (9-Hour Drive)

Wake before dawn for sunrise over Erg Chebbi. After breakfast, you’ll return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4, where your driver waits.

We drive north along the Ziz Valley, passing palm groves and fortified villages. A stop in Midelt gives you time for lunch and a view of the Middle Atlas foothills.

We continue through the cedar forest near Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques. Then we reach Ifrane, known for its alpine-style buildings and cool climate. The tour ends with a drop-off at your riad or hotel in Fes, usually between 6 and 8 PM.

Why does a one-way tour cost more than a round-trip?

Drivers need to return to Marrakech alone after dropping you in Fes. That return leg adds cost, which is reflected in the per-person price.

Best for first-time visitors who also want to see Fes

This route works well if Fes is already on your itinerary. It replaces a return drive with new scenery and a second Imperial City.

Best for travelers flying out of Fes instead of Marrakech

If your return flight leaves from Fes, this route saves you a separate transfer. You reach the airport without backtracking through Marrakech.

Where You'll Sleep: Dades Valley and Sahara Camp

Your first night is in a family-run guesthouse in the Dades Valley. Rooms come with private bathrooms and canyon views.

Your second night is in a Sahara desert camp near Erg Chebbi. Every tent has a real bed, not a mat on sand.

Is the desert camp tent private, with its own bathroom?

Yes. Standard camps offer private tents with shared bathroom facilities nearby. Luxury camps include a private bathroom with hot water inside each tent.

What's the difference between standard and luxury camps?

Standard camps focus on comfort and authenticity, with shared common areas. Luxury camps add private bathrooms, upgraded bedding, and a more polished dining setup.

The Camel Trek and Sunset in Erg Chebbi

Camels carry you across the dunes for about 45 minutes to reach camp. The slow pace gives you time to watch the sand change color.

How long is the camel ride, and is there an alternative?

The ride runs 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on your camp’s location. If you’d rather skip the camel, a 4×4 transfer is available at no extra cost.

What happens to your luggage during the camel trek?

You carry only what you need for the night. The camp’s 4×4 transports the rest of your luggage and meets you at camp.

From the Sahara to Fes: Ziz Valley, Cedar Forest, and Ifrane

Day three covers some of the most varied scenery on the trip. You’ll pass from desert palm groves to alpine forest in a single afternoon

What is Ifrane, and why do people call it "the Switzerland of Morocco"?

Ifrane sits in the Middle Atlas Mountains at over 1,600 meters. Stone chalets and pine forests give it a European look, unusual for Morocco. Snow covers the town most winters.

Will I actually see Barbary macaques in the cedar forest?

Most travelers do. These monkeys live wild in the cedar forest near Azrou and often approach the road. Feeding them is discouraged, since human food harms their health.

Vehicles, Driver, and Guide

Sahara Unlimited uses newer vehicles with working air conditioning, checked before every trip.

What type of vehicle is used, and how many people fit?

  • 4×4 (Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or similar): up to 4 travelers
  • Minivan (Mercedes Vito or similar): up to 8 travelers
  • Minibus for groups larger than 8, on request

Is the driver also a licensed guide?

Yes. Your driver holds a Moroccan tourism license and speaks English. Many have worked this exact route for over a decade.

Practical Details Before You Go

What’s the pick-up process in Marrakech, and drop-off process in Fes?

Pickup starts at 7:30 AM at your riad or hotel. If your street is too narrow for a vehicle, common in the old medina, we meet you at the nearest accessible corner. Drop-off in Fes happens at your riad or hotel, usually between 6 and 8 PM on day three.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes. Tell us about any allergies or preferences when booking. We pass this information to every guesthouse and camp on your route.

Is this tour suitable for children or older travelers?

Most travelers manage this tour well. Daily drives run 5 to 9 hours, with regular stops. If long drives feel difficult, ask about our 4-day version, which spreads the same route over more time.

What’s the best time of year for this route?

Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures across the mountains and desert. Winter can bring snow near Ifrane, so pack warm layers even if the desert stays mild.

What should you pack for mountains, desert, and Fes?

Bring layers for temperature swings between the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara. Add a scarf for sand and wind, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for walking in Fes’s medina.

Why Book This Tour With Sahara Unlimited

Sahara Unlimited has run private Morocco tours for over 12 years. We’ve hosted more than 5,000 travelers, with an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 across major review platforms, including TripAdvisor.

Licensed and registered — what that means for you

Our guides hold licenses from the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism. Every camp and guesthouse we use is personally inspected by our operations team before we recommend it. Unlicensed operators sometimes cut corners on vehicle upkeep and driver training, which is why this matters. The Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) publishes licensing guidance travelers can check before booking any operator.
