What This Tour Includes

This tour runs privately, for your group only. Your driver picks you up in Marrakech and returns you to the same city four days later. No other travelers share your vehicle.

Sahara Unlimited runs this route from our base near Marrakech’s Gueliz district. The extra day compared to our 3-day tour means fewer rushed stops and a scenic return through the Draa Valley instead of a direct drive back

Is this tour private, and how is it different from your 3-day tour?

Both tours are private. This 4-day version adds a full day, so you enter Merzouga and leave through a different route. The 3-day tour returns the same way it came. This tour loops south through Nkob, the Draa Valley, and Agdz instead.

Which tour should I choose: 3, 4, or 5 days?

Choose 3 days if you have limited time and want the fastest loop. Choose 4 days for a different return route and more time in the desert. Choose 5 days if you want an extra night to explore Erg Chebbi by 4×4 or add Zagora. Contact us and we’ll help you match the days to your trip.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: Marrakech to Merzouga and Back

We are one of the leading operators for tours and travels in Morocco from Marrakech. Detailed itinerary below. Possible to customize any of our desert trips from Marrakech.

Day 1: Marrakech to Dades Valley via Ait Benhaddou (6-Hour Drive)

Sahara Unlimited organises desert tour from Marrakech. This is private tour to Sahara desert , available every day.

Your driver picks you up at 8:00 AM from your riad or hotel. Pickup covers all central Marrakech, including areas near Bab Doukkala and the Menara district.

We climb the High Atlas Mountains on the Tizi n’Tichka pass, reaching 2,260 meters. We stop at Ait Benhaddou, a fortified clay village and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Its walls have appeared in Gladiator and other major films.

After lunch in Ouarzazate, we visit Taourirt Kasbah before continuing through Skoura’s palm groves and the rose fields of Kelaat M’Gouna. The day ends in the Dades Valley, where you sleep in a local guesthouse surrounded by rock canyons.

Day 2: Dades Valley to Merzouga via Todra Gorge (5-Hour Drive)

After breakfast, we drive through Todra Gorge. Limestone cliffs rise over 300 meters on both sides, with a river running along the base.

We continue through Tinghir and Erfoud, towns known for date palms and fossil workshops. By late afternoon, we reach Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Camels wait for you here. You’ll ride across the sand as the light shifts from gold to orange. At the top of a high dune, you’ll watch the sunset over the Sahara. Dinner and Berber drum music follow at camp. You sleep in a private tent under a clear desert sky.

Day 3: Free Time in Merzouga, Then to Draa Valley via Nkob (5-Hour Drive)

Wake before dawn for sunrise over Erg Chebbi. Many travelers add optional quad biking or a 4×4 excursion around the dunes this morning, at your own cost.

After breakfast, return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4. We drive southwest toward Tazzarine, a small town used as a filming location for Babel. In Nkob, you’ll have lunch and time to see the old kasbahs.

We continue through the Draa Valley to Agdz, a historic resting point on the old caravan routes to Timbuktu. The road passes palm groves and mud-brick villages before we reach Ouarzazate for the night.

Day 4: Ouarzazate to Marrakech via Telouet and the High Atlas (5-Hour Drive)

After breakfast, we visit the Kasbah of Telouet, once the residence of the powerful Glaoui family. Its walls still show mosaics and carved wood ceilings from that period.

We cross the High Atlas Mountains again through Tizi n’Tichka, with stops for photos along the way. The tour ends with a drop-off at your riad or hotel in Marrakech, usually in the late afternoon.

Where You'll Sleep: Dades Valley, Sahara Camp, and Ouarzazate

Your first night is in a family-run guesthouse in the Dades Valley. Rooms come with private bathrooms and canyon views.

Your second night is in a Sahara desert camp near Erg Chebbi. Every tent has a real bed, not a mat on sand.

Your third night is in a riad or hotel in Ouarzazate, giving you a comfortable stop before the final mountain crossing.

Is the desert camp tent private, with its own bathroom?

Yes. Standard camps offer private tents with shared bathroom facilities nearby. Luxury camps include a private bathroom with hot water inside each tent.

What's the difference between standard and luxury camps?

Standard camps focus on comfort and authenticity, with shared common areas. Luxury camps add private bathrooms, upgraded bedding, and a more polished dining setup.

The Camel Trek and Sunset in Erg Chebbi

Camels carry you across the dunes for about 45 minutes to reach camp. The slow pace gives you time to watch the sand change color.

How long is the camel ride, and is there an alternative?

The ride runs 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on your camp’s location. If you’d rather skip the camel, a 4×4 transfer is available at no extra cost.

What can I do with my free time in Merzouga?

Popular options include quad biking around the dunes, a 4×4 excursion to visit Berber families and the village of Khamlia, or simply resting at camp before the return journey.

Vehicles, Driver, and Guide

Sahara Unlimited uses newer vehicles with working air conditioning, checked before every trip.

What type of vehicle is used, and how many people fit?

  • 4×4 (Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or similar): up to 4 travelers
  • Minivan (Mercedes Vito or similar): up to 8 travelers
  • Minibus for groups larger than 8, on request

Is the driver also a licensed guide?

Yes. Your driver holds a Moroccan tourism license and speaks English. Many have worked this exact route for over a decade.

Practical Details Before You Go

What’s the pick-up and drop-off process in Marrakech?

Pickup starts at 8:00 AM at your riad or hotel. If your street is too narrow for a vehicle, common in the old medina, we meet you at the nearest accessible corner. Drop-off follows the same process on return, usually in the late afternoon of day four.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes. Tell us about any allergies or preferences when booking. We pass this information to every guesthouse and camp on your route.

Is this tour suitable for children or older travelers?

Yes. The extra day compared to our 3-day tour means shorter, more comfortable driving stretches. This makes it a good fit for families and travelers who prefer a slower pace.

What’s the best time of year for this route?

Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures across the mountains and desert. Summer days get hot in Merzouga but cool fast after sunset.

What should you pack for the desert and mountains?

Bring layers for temperature swings between the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara. Add a scarf for sand and wind, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for walking on dunes and kasbah steps.
