Why a Private Desert Tour, Not a Group One

You booked “private” for a reason. Here’s what that word means on this trip.

What “Private” Actually Means Here

Your vehicle is yours alone. No other travelers join your route.

You set the pace. Want an extra 20 minutes at Ait Ben Haddou? Just ask your driver.

Your guide adjusts stops for you. Group tours can’t do that. Fixed schedules leave no room for a slow coffee break in Ifrane or a longer walk through the Todra Gorge.

Bathroom stops happen on your schedule, not a group timetable. This matters most with young kids or older travelers.

Your driver stays with you the full three days. You won’t meet a new face each morning.

Who This Tour Is Best For

Couples want privacy for sunset photos on the dunes. This tour gives you that.

Families need flexible pacing. A private vehicle means no rushing tired kids between stops.

Small groups of friends often split the cost. Four people sharing one private vehicle costs less per person than you’d expect.

First-time visitors to Morocco benefit from a guide who explains context as you go, without a big group talking over the details.

Full Itinerary: Fes to Marrakech via Merzouga in 3 Days

We specialize in custom, authentic and unexpected Moroccan travel experiences for the sophisticated traveller. Contact us to plan your trip. Detailed itinerary below. Possible to customize any of our desert trips from Fes.

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou Cedar Forest – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga (about 7 hours drive)

Sahara Unlimited organises desert tour from Marrakech. This is private tour to Sahara desert , available every day.

Your driver picks you up at your riad or hotel in Fes. Pickup near Bab Boujloud, the blue gate of the old medina, or anywhere in the Ville Nouvelle works fine.

You leave Fes early, around 8:00 AM. This gives you enough daylight to reach Merzouga before sunset.

The road climbs south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Your first stop is Ifrane. Locals call it Morocco’s Switzerland. Stone chalets and pine trees replace the desert heat you’d expect.

Next comes the Azrou cedar forest. Barbary macaques live here in the wild. Your driver will stop so you can watch them up close, safely, from the vehicle or a short walk.

You’ll stop for lunch in Midelt. This town sits at the edge of the Atlas range, known locally for apple orchards and fossil shops.

After lunch, the route follows the Ziz Valley. Palm groves line the road for miles. Old kasbahs sit on the hillsides above the river.

By late afternoon, you reach Erfoud, the gateway town to the Sahara. From here it’s a short drive to Merzouga village and the base of Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco’s tallest dune fields.

You’ll switch to camels at the edge of the dunes. A 45-minute ride takes you into Erg Chebbi for sunset. Prefer not to ride a camel? Ask for a 4×4 transfer instead. Either way, you’ll reach camp before dark.

Dinner is a traditional Moroccan meal at your desert camp. Afterward, expect Berber drums around the fire and a clear view of the stars. Merzouga has almost no light pollution.

Overnight: Erg Chebbi dunes.

Day 2: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

Wake before sunrise. Climb a nearby dune with your guide to watch the light change over Erg Chebbi. This is the moment most travelers remember most from the whole trip.

Breakfast follows at camp. Then you’ll ride camels or take a 4×4 back to Merzouga village.

Your first stop is Rissani, once the capital of the Tafilalet region. Its souk runs Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. If your visit lines up with market day, ask your driver to stop.

From Rissani, the route heads toward Tinghir and the Todra Gorge. Limestone walls rise nearly 300 meters on either side of a narrow canyon road. Rock climbers come here from across Europe. You’ll have time to walk into the gorge on foot.

The road continues through the Dades Valley in the afternoon. Locals call this stretch the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” Reddish clay fortresses sit above the river at almost every turn.

You’ll spend the night in a hotel or riad in the Dades Valley, with dinner and breakfast included.

Overnight: Dades Valley.

Day 3: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Tizi n'Tichka Pass – Marrakech

After breakfast, you’ll drive toward Ouarzazate. Locals call it the “Hollywood of Africa.” Several major film studios sit just outside town.

Your next stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village on the old caravan route. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1987. Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia both filmed scenes here. You’ll walk through the ksar on foot, guided by your driver.

From Ait Ben Haddou, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains. You’ll cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest mountain road in North Africa at 2,260 meters.

Berber villages dot the mountainside on the descent toward Marrakech. Your driver will stop at a viewpoint if the weather allows clear photos.

You’ll reach Marrakech by early evening. Your driver drops you at your riad or hotel, anywhere from the medina near Jemaa el-Fnaa to hotels in Gueliz or the Hivernage district.

Best Time of Year for This Tour

Morocco’s desert climate changes fast by season. Plan around it.

March to May: Warm days, cool nights. This is the most comfortable season for camel riding and walking in the dunes.

June to September: Daytime highs in Merzouga often pass 40°C. Camel rides happen early morning or at sunset to avoid peak heat. Nights stay warm, around 25°C to 30°C.

October to November: Similar to spring. Clear skies and mild temperatures make this a strong choice for stargazing.

December to February: Daytime temperatures stay mild, around 18°C to 20°C. Nights can drop close to freezing in the desert. Pack a warm layer for the evening, even though the days feel comfortable.

Spring and autumn offer the best balance for most travelers. Summer works if you don’t mind heat and plan activities around it.

Tour Price & How It Works

How Pricing Scales With Group Size

Your vehicle and driver cost the same, whether one person books or six. That fixed cost splits across your group.

Two travelers pay more per person than a group of four. A family of five or six often pays close to the lowest per-person rate.

Ask us for a quote based on your exact group size. We’ll give you a clear number, not a range.

Departure Dates & Booking Process

This tour runs daily, year-round. There’s no fixed departure date to wait for.

Send us your preferred start date and hotel pickup location in Fes. We’ll confirm within 24 hours.

A deposit secures your booking. The remaining balance is paid to your driver-guide on arrival, in cash or by card, depending on your preference.

Meet Your Local Drivers & Guides

Your guide has driven the Fes-Merzouga-Marrakech route for 10 years. He knows the Ziz Valley and Dades Valley roads personally, not just from a map.

Every driver-guide on our team speaks English fluently. Many also speak French, Spanish, or German.

Our guides grew up near the routes they drive. That’s why they know which viewpoint gets the best light, and which café in Midelt serves the best mint tea.
