Your driver meets you at your riad in Fes around 8:00 AM. The road climbs south through the Middle Atlas Mountains toward Ifrane, a mountain town known for its alpine-style houses and cold winters. Locals call it the Switzerland of Morocco.
Past Ifrane, you’ll stop at the Azrou cedar forest. Wild Barbary macaques live here, and they’re used to visitors slowing down for a look. This is one of the few places on Earth you can see this species in the wild, according to the IUCN Red List, which lists them as endangered.
The road continues to Midelt for lunch, then drops through the Ziz Gorges toward Errachidia. From here, you’ll follow the Ziz Valley, a long stretch of palm groves and mudbrick villages fed by the Ziz River. Erfoud comes next, known locally for fossil workshops built into the rock. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Merzouga and the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Check in, rest, and get ready for the desert.
This day stays close to Merzouga, no long highway driving. In the morning, a 4×4 takes you off-road to visit a Berber nomad family. You’ll drink mint tea in their tent and learn how desert life works, day to day.
Next stop is Khamlia, a small village a few kilometers south of Merzouga. Its residents descend from Sub-Saharan traders and are known for Gnawa music, a style built on iron castanets and deep hand drums. A short live performance here is one of the best cultural stops on this route.
In the afternoon, you’ll trade your 4×4 for a camel. The trek into Erg Chebbi takes about 90 minutes, ending at your camp deep in the dunes as the sun drops. Dinner is cooked over a fire. Berber drummers usually play after dark. Above you, with no city lights for miles, the stars are unlike anything most travelers have seen.
Not every camp is the same, so here’s exactly what to expect from ours.
Your tent is private, not shared with strangers. Most camps in Erg Chebbi now offer ensuite tents with a real bed, a private toilet, and a basic shower. If you book the standard camp instead of the luxury option, showers may be shared. We’ll confirm which setup applies before you book.
You won’t carry your bag on the camel. Your driver takes your main luggage by 4×4 straight to the camp, so it’s waiting when you arrive. Bring a small day bag on the camel for water, sunscreen, and your camera.
Wake before sunrise for the walk, or short camel ride, back up the dune to watch the light change over Erg Chebbi. After breakfast and a shower at camp, you’ll head to Rissani, the old capital of the Tafilalet region and still home to a lively weekly souk.
From Rissani, the road runs through Tinjdad toward the Todra Gorges. These limestone canyon walls rise close to 300 meters on either side of a narrow river gorge, one of the most striking rock formations in Morocco, popular with climbers worldwide. You’ll have time to walk the gorge floor before lunch nearby.
In the afternoon, you’ll continue to Boumalne Dades and into the Dades Valley, known locally as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs for the mudbrick fortresses dotting its cliffs. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel with valley views.
The final day starts along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing Kelaa M’Gouna, center of Morocco’s rose oil industry, and the palm groves of Skoura. You’ll stop at Kasbah Amridil, one of the best-preserved kasbahs in the region.
In Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the Sahara, you’ll pass the Atlas Film Studios, where crews have shot scenes for Gladiator and Game of Thrones. From there, it’s a short drive to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified ksar recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Its clay towers have appeared in more film productions than almost any other site in Morocco.
The last stretch climbs the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest road pass in North Africa at 2,260 meters. From the summit, you’ll see the High Atlas range stretching in every direction. The descent into Marrakech ends at your riad, usually by late afternoon or early evening.

What happens to your luggage when you do the camel ride? Your driver transports your luggage by vehicle directly to camp. You only carry a small day bag on the camel.
What is the best time to visit Morocco for this route? March to May and September to November offer the mildest temperatures, both in the mountains and the desert. July and August bring intense desert heat, though nights are usually pleasant.
