The road north hugs the Atlantic coast. After about an hour, you reach Rabat, Morocco’s capital.
In Rabat, you stop at the Hassan Tower, an unfinished 12th-century minaret. Next to it stands the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, where the tombs of two Moroccan kings rest under hand-carved marble. From there, you walk through the Kasbah of the Oudayas, a walled district above the mouth of the Bou Regreg River. Its narrow lanes are painted blue and white, like a smaller cousin of Chefchaouen.
Next stop is Meknes, about an hour and a half east of Rabat. Meknes was Morocco’s imperial capital in the 17th century under Sultan Moulay Ismail. You walk through Bab Mansour, often called the most beautiful gate in North Africa. Inside the old city, you visit the royal stables, built to hold 12,000 horses.
From Meknes, it’s a short drive to Volubilis. This Roman city dates to the 3rd century B.C. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1997 for its well-preserved mosaics and triumphal arch. You walk among stone columns that have stood since before the Roman Empire reached its peak.
You reach Fes by early evening. Check-in at your riad inside the Fes medina, near Bab Boujloud. Dinner is included.
Fes el Bali is the oldest part of the city, and one of the largest car-free urban zones in the world. You explore it on foot, with a licensed local guide who knows its 9,000-plus alleys.
You start near Bab Boujloud, the blue-tiled gate that marks the medina’s main entrance. From there, you walk to the Al Attarine Madrasa, a 14th-century Islamic school known for its cedar wood carving and zellige tilework.
A short walk away stands the University of Al Quaraouiyine. Founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, it is recognized by UNESCO and Guinness World Records as the oldest continuously operating university on Earth. Non-Muslim visitors cannot enter the prayer hall, but you can see the green-tiled roof and the courtyard from nearby streets.
Your walk continues to the Chouara Tannery, where leather has been dyed by hand since the medieval period. Climb to a terrace above the tannery for a clear view of the dye pits below.
You finish the day in the souks, threading past spice stalls, metalworkers, and weavers. Return to your riad by late afternoon. The rest of the evening is free to explore Fes on your own, or rest before tomorrow’s long drive south.
Today covers the longest drive of the trip, but the scenery changes every hour.
You leave Fes and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, a town built in the 1930s with sloped roofs and stone chalets. Locals call it the Switzerland of Morocco because of its alpine look and cold winters.
Past Ifrane, you enter Morocco’s cedar forest, home to wild Barbary macaques. These monkeys often come close to the road. Stop here for 15-20 minutes to see them in the wild.
You continue through Azrou and Midelt, then descend into the Ziz Valley. The road follows the Ziz River through a gorge lined with date palms and red rock cliffs. This stretch offers some of the best photo stops on the entire route.
By late afternoon, you reach Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara’s Erg Chebbi dunes. Here you switch from your vehicle to a camel. Camel trek runs roughly 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the camp.
You ride into the dunes as the sun drops low. Dinner and the night are at a desert camp inside the dunes, under a sky with almost no light pollution.
Most travelers wake before dawn for this one. The Sahara sunrise from the top of a dune is, for many guests, the single image they remember most from Morocco.
After breakfast at the camp, you ride back to Merzouga by camel or by 4×4. Luggage travels separately by vehicle during the camel trek, so you carry only what you need for the ride.
From Merzouga, the road runs through Erfoud, known for fossil workshops cut into 350-million-year-old limestone. You can watch craftsmen polish ammonite and trilobite fossils pulled from the surrounding desert.
You continue west to the Todra Gorges, where the Todra River has carved a canyon through red rock walls that rise more than 300 meters in places. Rock climbers travel here from across Europe for routes that stay shaded most of the day.
From Todra, the route follows the Dades Valley, passing through Boumalne Dades and the rock formations locals call the “Monkey Fingers,” eroded clay pillars that line the riverbed.
Overnight is in a hotel in the Dades Valley or Skoura, depending on the day’s pace.
This is the day Morocco’s south meets its mountains.
You begin by passing through Skoura’s palm groves, then Kelaa M’Gouna, the center of Morocco’s rose-growing region. Each May, the town holds a Rose Festival, and you can often buy rose water straight from local producers along the road.
Next comes Ouarzazate, home to two major film studios. Scenes from Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones were shot in and around this region, largely because the red kasbah architecture needs little set-building.
Just outside Ouarzazate stands Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified ksar built from rammed earth. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1987. Its clustered towers and walls have appeared in dozens of films and shows. You can walk through the kasbah and climb to its highest point for a view across the Ounila Valley.
From here, the road climbs the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest mountain pass in Morocco at over 2,200 meters. The switchbacks cross the High Atlas range before dropping down toward Marrakech. You arrive in Marrakech by early evening.
Your final day stays inside Marrakech.
You start at Jemaa el-Fnaa, the city’s main square, busy with snake charmers, food stalls, and storytellers by midday. From there, your guide leads you into the souks, a maze of covered markets selling leather, lanterns, spices, and rugs.
You visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa, a 14th-century Islamic college near the square. Its carved cedar ceilings and tiled courtyard rank among the finest examples of Marrakech architecture still open to visitors.
Add or remove a stop at the Bahia Palace or Majorelle Garden based on your group’s pace and interest.
