Morocco’s four imperial cities sit within a 600 km loop from Casablanca. This tour takes you through all of them. You will also cross the Middle Atlas, sleep in the Sahara Desert near Merzouga, walk through the Todra Gorge, and end in Marrakech.
Most travelers come to Morocco once. This itinerary is built for that one trip. It covers the country’s most important historic sites without rushing you through them. Every stop has a reason. Every overnight has been chosen for comfort and location.

Your driver meets you at Mohammed V International Airport (IATA: CMN), located 30 km south of the city centre via the A3 motorway. After check-in at your hotel near the Ain Diab district, you have the evening free.
If you arrive before 4 pm, your driver will take you to the Hassan II Mosque on Boulevard de la Corniche. It is the largest mosque in Africa. The minaret stands 210 metres tall. Non-Muslim visitors can enter on guided tours at set times — your guide will confirm the schedule based on your arrival.
Walking along the Corniche at sunset is worth an hour of your time. The Atlantic is right there. Casablanca’s coastline is often overlooked by travelers who rush north to Rabat. It should not be.

This is your longest driving day: roughly 340 km from Casablanca to Fes. You leave after breakfast and head north on the A1 motorway toward Rabat.
Rabat is Morocco’s capital and the residence of King Mohammed VI. You will stop at the Hassan Tower on Avenue Mohammed V — a 12th-century unfinished minaret standing 44 metres high. Next to it is the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, where Morocco’s last two kings are buried. From here, a 10-minute walk takes you to the Kasbah of the Udayas, a fortress built by the Almohads in the 12th century overlooking the Bou Regreg River.
After Rabat, you drive east on the N6 road toward Meknes. On the way, you stop at Volubilis — a Roman archaeological site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ruins date to the 3rd century BC. The mosaics inside the Gordian Palace are remarkably well preserved.
Meknes follows. You walk through Bab Mansour, one of the most impressive gates in North Africa, built in 1732 under Sultan Moulay Ismail. The nearby Moulay Ismail Mausoleum is open to visitors of all faiths.
You arrive in Fes by early evening. Your riad is inside the Fes el-Bali medina, a few minutes’ walk from Bab Bou Jeloud — the blue gate at the western entrance to the old city.

Fes el-Bali is the oldest continuously inhabited medina in the world. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1981. It has over 9,400 streets and lanes. Some are too narrow for two people to pass at once.
Your morning begins at the Chouara Tannery, near Derb Chouara in the northeast quarter. It is the oldest leather tannery in Morocco, operating since the 11th century. Your guide will take you to a terrace overlooking the dye vats — the view is one of the most recognisable images in all of North Africa.
From there, you walk through the Andalusian quarter to Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque. Founded in 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri, it is widely recognised as the world’s oldest continuously operating university. The courtyard is visible from the entrance. The mosque itself is not open to non-Muslims, but the surrounding medresa buildings are.
After lunch at a traditional Moroccan restaurant in the medina, your guide takes you through the copper souk at Es-Seffarine Square and the woodworking souk near the Bou Inania Madrasa. The Bou Inania Madrasa, built in the 14th century, is one of the few medersas in Morocco open to all visitors. The tilework and carved plaster walls inside are extraordinary.
The afternoon is free for your own exploration. Your guide will recommend specific lanes and shops worth visiting — and the ones that are purely for tourists.

Today the landscape changes completely. You leave Fes heading south on the N13 road through Ifrane, Midelt, and Erfoud before reaching Merzouga.
Your first stop is Ifrane, a small mountain town built in a French colonial style in the 1930s. At 1,665 metres above sea level, it sits in the Middle Atlas and looks nothing like the Morocco most travelers expect. The streets are clean and quiet. Barbary macaque monkeys live in the cedar forest just outside the town near Azrou — you will almost certainly see them from the road.
South of Midelt, the road drops through the Ziz Valley. The Ziz River cuts through red rock gorges before opening into a long palm oasis that runs for nearly 150 km. This valley has been a caravan route for over a thousand years.
You arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon. The village sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi — a sea of orange sand dunes rising to 150 metres. Your camel guide meets you at the camp entrance. The trek to your desert camp takes about 45 minutes on camelback. The pace is slow and the light changes fast.
Dinner is in the camp. A local musician plays after dark. The sky above Erg Chebbi on a clear night shows more stars than most people have seen in their lives.

Your guide wakes you before dawn. You ride back to the village on camelback as the sun comes up over the dunes. It is the moment most travelers on this tour say they remember most.
After breakfast, you drive west through Rissani — the historic market town and ancestral home of the Alaouite dynasty, Morocco’s current royal family — and on to Tinghir.
The Todra Gorge is 15 km east of Tinghir on the Route de Todra. At its narrowest point, the gorge walls rise 300 metres straight up. The Todra River runs along the floor. In the afternoon, the sun reaches the canyon floor and the rock turns gold. Climbers come from across Europe for the vertical routes in the upper gorge. You do not need to climb to appreciate it — a 20-minute walk through the canyon is enough.
From Todra you drive west along the Route des Kasbahs through the Dades Valley. This road follows the Dades River through a corridor of mud-brick fortresses, or kasbahs, some still inhabited by Berber families. The valley is also called the Valley of the Roses — in late April, the pink damask roses grown here supply much of the world’s rose water.

You leave the Dades Valley heading west along the R704 road through the Skoura palmery — a large oasis of date palms and kasbahs roughly 40 km east of Ouarzazate.
Ouarzazate sits at 1,160 metres above sea level and is sometimes called the Gateway to the Sahara. The Kasbah of Taourirt, in the centre of town, is one of the best-preserved kasbahs in Morocco. Your guide will walk you through it.
From Ouarzazate, you drive 30 km northwest on the N9 road to Ait Ben Haddou. This fortified village, or ksar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been continuously inhabited since the 11th century. The entire structure is built from local red earth. Film productions including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones used it as a filming location. Your guide will point out which towers appeared in which scenes.
After lunch at a restaurant inside the ksar, you drive north on the N9 over the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass at 2,260 metres. The road is well maintained. The views across the High Atlas are wide and clear on most days. You descend into the Marrakech Plain and arrive at your riad by early evening.

Marrakech is called the Red City because its medina walls and buildings are built from local pink sandstone. The colour changes through the day. In the early morning it is pale. By late afternoon it turns deep ochre.
Your morning guided tour covers four main sites. The Bahia Palace, on Rue Riad Zitoun el-Jdid, was built in the late 19th century for the Grand Vizier Si Moussa. Its 150 rooms surround a series of tiled courtyards. It is one of the finest examples of Moroccan craftsmanship in the country.
The Saadian Tombs are a five-minute walk from the palace, off Rue de la Kasbah. They date to the 16th century and were sealed for nearly 300 years until rediscovered in 1917. The Chamber of the Twelve Columns inside the mausoleum is covered in Italian Carrara marble and carved cedarwood.
The Koutoubia Mosque sits at the western edge of the medina on Avenue Mohammed V. Built in the 12th century, its 70-metre minaret was the model for the Giralda tower in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. Non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, but the gardens surrounding it are open to all.
Majorelle Garden is 20 minutes by taxi from the medina, in the Gueliz district on Rue Yves Saint Laurent. French painter Jacques Majorelle built it between 1923 and 1962. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge purchased and restored it in 1980. The cobalt blue pavilion is the signature image of Marrakech.
The afternoon is yours. Jemaa el-Fna square is a 5-minute walk from most medina riads. During the day it is relatively quiet. At dusk, the smoke from 100 food stalls rises together and the square transforms. It is listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Sit at the terrace of Cafe de France on the north side of the square and watch it happen. Order a mint tea. Take your time.

Breakfast at your riad. Your driver departs for Casablanca via the A7 motorway. The drive takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes under normal conditions.
Marrakech Menara Airport (IATA: RAK) is also an option for departures if your flight leaves from Marrakech. Let us know when you book and we will adjust the final day accordingly.
If your Casablanca flight is in the evening, your driver can take you on a short tour of the city before the airport drop-off — the Hassan II Mosque exterior, the Habbous Quarter, and the old Medina of Casablanca are all within 30 minutes of Mohammed V Airport.

The US State Department rates Morocco at Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions — the same level as France, Germany, and Japan. The four imperial cities on this tour are well-policed areas with established tourist infrastructure. Petty theft around busy souks is the most common issue travelers report. Your guide will brief you on what to watch for before you enter any busy market area. Solo female travelers make up a significant portion of our bookings. March, April, October, and November are the best months. Temperatures are comfortable across all stops, including the Sahara, and the roads over the Tizi n’Tichka pass are fully open. July and August are hot in the desert and Marrakech — daytime temperatures exceed 40°C. December through February is cool to cold in the mountains. The Atlas pass can occasionally close briefly for snow in January. We run this tour year-round and will advise you if any weather considerations apply to your dates.

Citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and most EU countries do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Citizens of other countries should check with the Moroccan Embassy or consulate in their home country. The official source for Moroccan entry requirements is the Direction Generale de la Surete Nationale (DGSN) at dgsn.ma.
Pack light layers. Mornings and evenings in the desert and the Atlas Mountains are cold even in summer. Middays in Marrakech and the south are hot. A light jacket or fleece, comfortable walking shoes with grip for the gorges and medina streets, and a loose-fitting long-sleeved shirt or top for sun and cultural modesty cover almost everything. For women visiting mosques and medersas, shoulders and knees should be covered — a scarf or light shawl works. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle. Tap water in Morocco is treated but bottled water is widely available and inexpensive.
The Moroccan dirham (MAD) is the local currency. As of 2025, 1 USD is approximately 10 MAD. Budget around 100–150 MAD per day for lunches, 20–50 MAD for street snacks and coffee, and 200–400 MAD if you plan to shop. ATMs are available in all cities on this tour. Currency exchange offices in the medinas often give better rates than hotels but are less predictable. Bring some cash from home for the first day in Casablanca before you find an ATM.
