Your driver-guide meets you at Mohammed V International Airport. The drive into central Casablanca takes about 45 minutes without traffic.
Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city and its economic capital. It sits on the Atlantic coast, not the Mediterranean, which surprises many first-time visitors.
The main stop today is the Hassan II Mosque on Boulevard Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah. The minaret stands 210 meters tall, one of the tallest religious structures in the world. Non-Muslim visitors can enter with a guided tour, unlike most active mosques in Morocco. Go for the late-morning tour slot. Light hits the ocean-facing courtyard best before noon.
Afterward, most travelers rest. Jet lag hits hard after a long-haul flight. Tomorrow’s drive runs 5.5 hours.
You leave Casablanca early and reach Rabat in about an hour. Rabat is Morocco’s political capital, quieter and greener than Casablanca.
Two stops matter here. The Hassan Tower, an unfinished 12th-century minaret near the Bou Regreg river. And the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, guarded by royal cavalry in red uniforms.
From Rabat, the road climbs north through farmland and Rif foothill towns toward Chefchaouen. The drive takes about 4.5 more hours.
Chefchaouen sits at roughly 600 meters elevation in the Rif Mountains. Its old town is painted almost entirely blue, tied to the city’s Jewish refugee history in the 1930s. Narrow streets like Rue Targui lead toward the main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam. For coffee with a view over the blue rooftops, ask your guide about the rooftop café near Ras el Maa spring, a local favorite.
Morning starts with photos in Chefchaouen’s blue medina before the day-trip crowds arrive. Then the drive south begins.
The first stop is Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. These are the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, dating to the 3rd century BC. Mosaic floors are still visible in several villa foundations.
Next comes Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Bab Mansour, the main gate to the old medina, is considered one of the most impressive gates in North Africa. Built in 1732, it still stands at the edge of Place El-Hedim.
The final stretch to Fes takes under an hour. Fes el-Bali, the old medina, is also UNESCO-listed and one of the largest car-free urban zones on earth.
No driving today. A licensed local guide leads you through Fes el-Bali on foot, starting near Bab Boujloud, the blue-and-green gate marking the medina’s main entrance.
Fes el-Bali dates to the 9th century, with over 9,000 narrow streets and alleys, too tight for cars. Donkeys still carry goods through some sections.
Highlights include the Chouara Tannery, where leather has been dyed by hand since medieval times, and the exterior of Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 AD and recognized by UNESCO and Guinness World Records as the oldest existing university in the world.
For lunch, skip the tourist terraces near Bab Boujloud. Ask your guide to take you to a small stall near Place Seffarine, where locals eat between metalworking shifts.
The afternoon is free for the souks.
Overnight: Fes.
This is the longest driving day. Your driver breaks it into stages, with stops roughly every 90 minutes.
First stop is Ifrane, a mountain town built in a European alpine style during the French protectorate era. Locals sometimes call it Morocco’s “Switzerland” for its architecture and cold winters.
Next is the Azrou cedar forest, home to wild Barbary macaques, a monkey species found only in Morocco and Algeria’s Atlas and Rif ranges. Cars usually stop here for 15-20 minutes.
The road then drops through Midelt and follows the Ziz Valley, a long stretch of palm groves fed by the Ziz River. The landscape shifts from green valley to open desert over roughly two hours.
By late afternoon, the dunes appear on the horizon. Most travelers say this is the moment the trip starts to feel real. A 4×4 or camel transfers you into camp before sunset.
Overnight: Desert camp, Erg Chebbi.
Sunrise over Erg Chebbi is the reason most travelers add this route to their trip. Dunes here reach up to 150 meters, among the tallest in Morocco.
After breakfast, you visit Khamlia, a small village known for Gnawa music, brought to Morocco by sub-Saharan African communities generations ago. Live drum performances happen most afternoons.
You’ll also pass through palm groves near Merzouga town and may stop at a small fossil workshop, since this region sits on an ancient seabed rich in fossilized trilobites.
The evening camel trek back into the dunes takes about 45 minutes each way. By the time you reach camp, the light is nearly gone and the first stars are already out. Dinner and Berber music follow under the open sky.
Overnight: Desert camp or Merzouga guesthouse.
Leaving the desert, the first stop is Rissani, once a trading post on trans-Saharan caravan routes. Its Sunday and Thursday souks are still active.
Erfoud follows shortly after, known across Morocco for fossil quarrying and marble work.
The road then climbs toward Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon with rock walls rising up to 300 meters on either side. The Todra River runs through the base, and the gorge is a known spot for rock climbing.
By late afternoon, you reach Dades Valley, sometimes called the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs for its dense cluster of old fortified homes along the Dades River. Ask your guide about the viewpoint above the valley road, best reached just before sunset when the rock formations turn deep red.
Overnight: Dades Valley.
The morning route passes through Rose Valley, known for its May rose harvest used in Moroccan cosmetics and perfume.
Next is Skoura, home to one of Morocco’s largest palm groves, planted centuries ago to support desert agriculture.
The major stop of the day is Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village, or ksar, built from rammed earth. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and has appeared in several international film productions.
From there, the road crosses Tizi n’Tichka, a mountain pass reaching over 2,200 meters, before descending into Marrakech.
Overnight: Marrakech.
No driving today. A local guide walks you through the Marrakech medina, another UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
The tour usually begins near Jemaa el-Fnaa, the city’s main square, active since the 11th century and still filled daily with food stalls, musicians, and storytellers.
From there, you enter the souks, a maze of covered markets selling spices, leather, lanterns, and textiles. The Bahia Palace, built in the 1860s for a grand vizier, is a common stop for its detailed tilework and gardens.
For a quiet photo away from the crowds, ask your guide about the rooftop terraces overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa near sunset, when the square’s lights start coming on.
The afternoon is free for shopping or resting before your final day.

The final drive north takes about three hours on the highway connecting Marrakech to Casablanca.
