You head southeast out of Marrakech on the N9 — the same road caravans used for centuries moving gold, salt and ivory between the Sahara and the coast. Within 30 minutes, the buildings thin out and the High Atlas begins.

The Tizi n’Tichka Pass — 2,260 metres

The road winds up through Berber villages clinging to the mountain slopes. The pass sits at an elevation of 2,260 metres above sea level. In winter, it carries snow. In summer, the air is cool and thin at the top. Your driver knows every bend. Stop at the summit — the view across the Atlas is worth it. 

The road down the southern side is different. The landscape changes fast. The green valleys of the north give way to ochre rock, dried river beds and the first signs of pre-Saharan terrain. You are crossing into a different Morocco.

Ait Benhaddou — UNESCO World Heritage Site

Ait Benhaddou sits 8km off the N9 road between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, on the southern edge of the High Atlas. You cross the Oued Mellah river on foot to reach the ksar.

It was built on a hillside above the Oued Mellah river in Ouarzazate Province and is the finest surviving example of pre-Saharan earthen architecture in Morocco. The towers are made of pise — mud, straw and small stones packed together and shaped by hand. Some of those walls are 400 years old.

Walk up through the lanes to the agadir at the top — the communal granary that fed the village during sieges and drought. The view from up there across the valley toward Ouarzazate is one of the clearest you will find in southern Morocco.

You have probably seen this place before without knowing it. Ait Benhaddou has appeared in more major international productions than any other location in Africa — including Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.

Allow 90 minutes here. It earns every minute.

Ouarzazate — Lunch and the Gate of the Desert

Ouarzazate sits at the crossroads of southern Morocco — at the junction of the road south into the Draa Valley, the road east toward the Dades Gorges and Merzouga, and the road north back over the Tichka Pass toward Marrakech.

It is a proper town of approximately 60,000 people with restaurants, petrol stations, and the last reliable ATM before Zagora.

Stop here for lunch. Your guide knows where the locals actually eat — not the tourist-facing places on the main boulevard, but the side-street restaurants on Avenue Mohammed V where a proper tagine costs 40 dirhams and tastes like someone’s mother made it.

After lunch, a short stop at the Taourirt Kasbah — a 19th-century fortress at the east end of town that once belonged to the Glaoui clan. It is smaller than Ait Benhaddou but less visited, and the carved plaster interior work is some of the finest in the region.

The Draa Valley — N9 South to Zagora

This is the section of the drive most tour companies rush through. You should not rush through it.

The Draa Valley road runs 200 kilometres south from Ouarzazate to Zagora on the N9, passing through Morocco’s longest palm grove, ancient pisé kasbahs, and Berber villages along the Draa River.

The first major stop is Agdz — a small market town 68 kilometres south of Ouarzazate where the palm groves begin in full. The Tamnougalt Kasbah sits just outside town, above the river — one of the oldest surviving kasbahs in the valley, used as a set for films you will recognise.

The road south of Agdz follows the Draa River. On both sides, date palms stretch to the horizon. Between the palms, you pass Timiderte, then the Timiderte Kasbah, then a sequence of smaller villages built from the same ochre earth as the ground they sit on. Everything here is the colour of the desert. The villages look like they grew out of the land rather than being placed on it.

You arrive in Zagora in the late afternoon. The town sign still reads: Tombouctou: 52 jours — Timbuktu: 52 days by camel. That sign has been there since 1947. It still measures distance in camel days.

Tinfou Dunes and the Camel Ride

The Tinfou Dunes sit 8 kilometres south of Zagora on the road toward M’Hamid. Your driver takes you there directly.

These are not the towering 150-metre dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. The Tinfou Dunes are smaller, quieter and completely different in character — pre-Saharan dunes on the edge of the rocky hammada, with the Draa palm groves visible behind you and open desert ahead.

Your camel is waiting.

The ride to camp takes about 45 minutes. The camels walk slowly. That is the right pace. The light at this hour turns the sand from gold to deep amber and then to a dark orange that fades as the stars begin appearing. The sky here — with no city within 360 kilometres — is one of the clearest you will see anywhere on earth.

The Desert Camp — Dinner and Overnight

Your camp has private tents with real beds, blankets and a shared bathroom block. Dinner is a Moroccan spread — harira soup, slow-cooked lamb tagine, Berber bread baked in the ground. After dinner, your camp host lights a fire. Someone brings a guembri. The drumming starts.

You do not need to do anything. You just sit in the desert under the Milky Way and let Morocco be Morocco.
